1940’s WEAF (NBC) Babe Ruth Baseball Club Card
Given to the kids who were present for a studio broadcast of the “Babe Ruth In Person” radio program.
1940’s Mel Ott Velvet Tobacco Ad
Mel Ott - New York Giants Popular Manager
“Better Tobacco For A Smoker’s Merry Christmas”
Towel Time For Babe Ruth
Babe worked up quite a sweat during one of his many exhibition appearances to benefit the war effort during WWII. Fun fact: During Babe’s playing days with the Yankees (1920-34), the team didn’t wear the familiar “NY” logo on their home jerseys. Instead, they wore plain pinstripes. The “NY” came back to stay from 1936-onward. So, if you see a picture of The Babe wearing that logo, it’s after his retirement.
Granger Tobacco Ad - 1940’s
Chicago Cubs Mgr. Jimmy Wilson
Looking sharp in his saddle shoes and pipe!
Babe Shouts From the Press Box
Braves Field - Boston, MA - ca.1940’s
My guess is that The Babe is razzing a player or coach that he knows down on the field.
1940’s Granger Ad - Sid Luckman - Right For Your Pipe!
Hall of Fame Chicago Bears quarterback Sid Luckman for Granger pipe tobacco. Sid’s name isn’t prevalent enough in all those “Greatest Jewish Athlete” discussions.
1940’s Stan Musial Chesterfield Ad
Triple Smoking Pleasure - Always Milder, Better Tasting, Cooler Smoking
Babe & Claire Head For The Skies
The original source lists the date as ca.1934-40, seems about right…although I’d lean towards the latter part of that. Looks like they’re hitching a ride on a U.S. Mail Air Express plane.
Babe Ruth, Red Barber & Pee Wee Reese - CBS Radio 1940’s
Looks like Pee Wee is getting some last minute pointers from Red Barber. I don’t know the exact year, but it looks like post-war ca.1946-48. LOVE those old microphones!
Story Time With The Babe - WOR Radio NY Interview - 1940’s
All eyes and ears are on The Babe as he gives a live interview to WOR Radio New York. I don’t have a specific year for this pic, but it’s obviously post-retirement yet pre-illness…so early-mid 1940’s. Looks like a festive occasion judging from the beer glasses and coasters.
