“Babe Ruth Day” From The 3/4 Century Club
St. Petersburg, Florida - March 25, 1933
Eighty years ago today! From the original wire caption: “Babe Ruth is more accustomed to affixing his signature to baseballs than receiving an autographed sphere. But here he’s being presented a ball by Charles W. Eldridge, 102, a member of the Three Quarter Century Club, at St. Petersburg, Fla. The ball is inscribed with the names of members of the club all of whom are over 75 years of age.”
1930 New York Yankees Team
St. Petersburg, Florida - March 8, 1930
It’s funny, the only two players in this picture who aren’t wearing their Yankees jerseys are Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig. Then again, they were kind of a big deal.
1932 New York Yankees Team
Here’s the 1932 version of the annual spring training team pic that Yankees owner Col. Jacob Ruppert liked to show up for, front and center. Standing behind him is rookie pitcher Johnny Allen who is disturbing the uniform continuity of the picture by wearing a “YANKEES” road jersey that the team wore during the 1927-30 seasons. I’m sure he didn’t mind the hand-me-down jersey as he prepared for a rookie campaign that ended with him holding a 17-4 record…in what would be Babe Ruth’s last championship season.
