Did you know that “Pittsburgh” officially dropped the “h” at the end of the city name from 1890-1911! In 1890, President Benjamin Harrison established the U.S. Board on Geographic Names in order to establish order in the naming of cities, towns, lakes etc. One of their first orders of business was that all cities and towns that ended in “-burgh” had to drop the h. The board finally relented and allowed the “h” back in Pittsburgh in 1911.
