1944 Detroit Tigers Team
WWII had taken its toll on quite a few major league rosters by 1944. For 23 yr. old pitcher Hal Newhouser, a leaky heart valve made him 4-F (ineligible to be drafted), even so…he tried more than once to enlist and was rejected. He responded by having a breakout year in ‘44, going 29-9 with a 2.22 ERA to win the first of back-to-back AL MVP awards.
