105 Years Ago Today...
Opening Day Ceremonies - Hilltop Park, NY - April 14, 1908
Philadelphia Athletics vs. New York Highlanders (NY 1 - Phi 0)
1899 St. Louis Perfectos Team
This team was called the Perfectos for only one year. The following season they would become the much more familiar St. Louis Cardinals. Standing all the way to the left is Denton True Young, better known as Cy Young (“Cy” is short for “Cyclone”).
1888 Louisville Colonels Team
You can check out the stats of Pete Browning, Chicken Wolf and the rest of this classic 19th century team here: 1888 Louisville Colonels Team stats.
1930 New York Yankees Team
St. Petersburg, Florida - March 8, 1930
It’s funny, the only two players in this picture who aren’t wearing their Yankees jerseys are Babe Ruth & Lou Gehrig. Then again, they were kind of a big deal.
1930’s St. Louis Cardinals Team - Spring Training
While I was looking through my archives I came by this great picture. I’m not 100% sure about the year, but based on the uniforms (jerseys + socks) and the inclusion of Dizzy Dean and Mgr. Gabby Street, it’s very likely to be from 1933.
1947 Marianao Tigers Team
This Cuban Winter League Baseball Team featured Minnie Minoso, Ray Dandridge and Mgr. Adolfo Luque.
1926 New York Yankees Team - Caps On, Caps Off
Here’s an edit I made combining two pics I had of the ‘26 Yankees during the same photo shoot. One with their caps on, one with their caps off.
1910 Fat Men’s Amusement Baseball Team
Back in the good ol’ days! Great period clothing on the folks in the stands.
1915 New York Yankees Team
An often told tale is that the Yankees switched their uniforms to pinstripes to cover the girth of the newly acquired Babe Ruth in 1920 (who wasn’t even that heavy…well not yet). That is purely a false myth, as evidenced by the use of Yankee pinstripes five years earlier here in 1915.
